Frequently Asked Questions

Will the system "time out"if you have been logged on for a certain amount of time with no activity? Yes, there will be an automated time out. However, it is still the C-IV project's recommendation to log in and out of the System whenever the worker knows he/she will be leaving his/her desk for an extended period of time.

Can workers move through the system without using the mouse? Within a screen, a user can hit the "tab" key and move through the fields on that page. Because the system is built on web-based technology, the mouse is required when moving to different screens or areas of the system.

Where will the C-IV application reside? The C-IV application will reside on Sun Servers in El Segundo at the Electronic Data Systems (EDS) data center. There will also be a back-up server facility that will be located in Northern California.

What does the term workstation encompass? The term workstation is used in reference to the actual computer, which will be running the C-IV application. It does not include the desk or computer furniture.

Is the speed of the application affected because it is running on the server vs. the workstation in the thin client environment? The technology, which was chosen by the Project, is a combination of current web and enterprise server technology. The combination of the two will produce a stable environment for the application. The goal of the project team is to meet or exceed performance and speed requirements as set by the Consortium.

What is the standard PC speed needed to run the C-IV application? The C-IV team is holding off on the selection of computers for the project in order to take full advantage of the latest technology at the time it is chosen. This information will be provided when the equipment is selected.

Will we need electrical upgrades? Prior to the infrastructure rollout within each county a site survey will be conducted to determine if the current environment will support the C-IV system. It is at this point that possible electrical upgrades will be addressed.

Will there be county based technical support? (i.e. someone who can come to my desk to assist) Yes. County-based technical support will be provided.

Will the system be able to be updated after it is finished? Who will make updates and changes? The Consortium's contract with C-IV includes a 10 year maintenance phase after full implementation. During this time the C-IV project team will maintain and update the system as required.

Who will maintain the computers? Is the maintenance and operations period when our people take over? During the maintenance and operation period county staff will work with contractors to maintain the C-IV LAN, operational technology (computers) and help desk. The counties have indicated the number of employees they would like to dedicate to these tasks.

With many users logging in at the same time (not just one county but four), how are you planning to accommodate slow downs and crashes? The C-IV team is aware of this issue and is currently examining the possibilities. Part of the advantage of a web-based system (rather than a client server model) is the ability to reduce the chances of such difficulties. The system is being designed to support processing volumes in excess of projected peak traffic levels.

Will we be required to replace existing computers that already meet the system requirements for C-IV? Prior to the infrastructure rollout within each county a site survey will be conducted to determine if the current environment will support the C-IV system. The ultimate goal is to have one computer per "desk". The C-IV Solicitation of Proposals (SOP) required new computers as part of the C-IV System. However, there is a possibility that if existing computers meet the standards they may not be replaced.

How will we phase in the best technology over the years? Technology refreshment of the C-IV system will occur both as a result of the annual refreshment process and planned maintenance and upgrades. It will allow all components of the C-IV system to be periodically reviewed and kept up to date with advances of technology.

How do you know when you are done installing and testing the system? Are there performance guarantees? The C-IV infrastructure installation plan includes the issuance of a site completion certificate signaling that the site has been installed according to the requirements. A test plan will be executed in order to confirm network performance prior to the issuance of this certificate.

What is the hardware configuration for C-IV? The configuration for the production machines has not yet been determined, but we currently expect to purchase machines similar to the following: Pentium 4 processor @ 1.5GHz, 512MB RAM, and 20GB hard disk.

Will our existing applications run on the new C-IV computers? Some county IT staff have already begun compatibility testing of existing county applications with the Windows XP operating system. As testing / remediation is not yet complete, the C-IV project is unable to answer this question fully at this time. Required packaged applications will be replaced with equivalent software. Custom applications that run on the existing PCs fall into three categories: those that will not be ported to the C-IV Desktop, those that will be ported and used before Release 2, and those that will remain following the conversion of Release 2. It is intended that by the time computers are distributed to the counties, comprehensive testing of the existing applications will have been successfully completed using the new operating system. County IT and C-IV Project personnel are working together on this task.

How many scanners per office will there be? The requirements and design for the imaging system are currently in development.
